Tom had driven them back to the precinct where they reported exactly what had happened with the rally and the car chase. The Chief had ordered Carrie to go and have her head looked at and then to take the rest of the day off and not to come in the next day. Carrie hadn't complained. Her head had been throbbing from the hit from the rock. Tom had driven her to the ER where the doctor had said she was lucky it hadn't broken the skin or caused a concussion.

"I'll take you home," Tom said.

"My car is still at the park. I need to get it."

"Let me get you inside and resting, then I'll go with a friend and get it for you."

Carrie had been too tired to argue. "I've got the rave tomorrow night," she suddenly recalled.

"Think you'll be up to going?"

"I'm going Elway." She narrowed her eyes at him.

"Okay, I'll bring your keys by around dinnertime."

He'd dropped her car and keys off exactly as he'd promised, and Carrie had gone to bed early.

The next day she slept in, took care of some household chores, and tried to relax. She got ready for the rave around seven-thirty and then headed out to follow the app to the rave location.

Before stepping out of her car, Carrie looked at herself in the rearview mirror. She had applied a restrained — but for her, copious — amount of make-up, and also did her hair up in a way that she never had before. She was aware that some officers who tried to disguise themselves as young partygoers would also try to deck themselves out as if they were trying to hide about ten or twenty years of their age, which not only didn't work at all, but also advertised the fact that the person doing it was either deluded about her own ageing process, or an undercover cop. Or both. So, she was careful to look like she was still in her 30s. But just a thirty-something going out to have some fun. She had purchased the top, skirt, and leather jacket especially for this event at the same high-end secondhand shop she'd gotten her disguise for the rally. These weren't items that she normally kept in her wardrobe. She rarely went out to party, so she didn't have stuff like this in her closet.

She looked at herself in the rearview mirror. It was almost as if she was riding inside some sort of a vehicle that looked like a completely different person. It wasn't a comfortable look for her. She had never been one to go out and party hard, not even in high school or college. She'd always been very focussed and goal oriented. Partying just wasn't on her agenda. Sure she'd gone out for drinks and stuff with friends, attended the usual school dances and the like, but the hardcore stuff had never interested her.

She checked her weapon, making sure the safety was on and it was accessible from inside her bra, picked up her purse and slipped it on crossways over her chest.
